£150,000! That's what I had spent the year I launched my very first startup. And after
all the
time and resources I had poured into getting it off the ground, what did I have to
show
for it?
It had all started so well too. (Or so I thought). I had chosen a great name that I
believed would resonate with the 'cool kids'. The name was a slang term that people
of my age and ethnicity would use you all the time. I then paid loads of money to a
brand agency to create the logo. After a few iterations, they finally came up with
something I was happy with.
What did I do next?
I did the natural thing everyone does when
they believe they have a great brand. I put the logo everywhere. My website, social
media, flyers, coasters and even condoms! (Someone told me sex sells. They were wrong!)
Of course, I wasn't alone in this endeavor. I hired some inexperienced software developers and personally mentored and trained them. In doing so I discovered I had a real talent for teaching and making things easy to understand. They eventually became great software engineers. Below you can see me in a picture with my first employees.
Like most Startup business owners I come across, I thought that's what branding consisted of. A name, a logo and some nice colours. And yes, the brand elements are a core part of a brand. But if you don't know how to choose those elements to resonate with your target audience, you will never attract your perfect customer. This is precisely what happened to me.
So there I was after a year with no customers using my events software. I had run out of money and I had zero hope of making my initial investment back. Being in the position of having to let my employees go is one the most painful memories I have to date.
This story isn't unqiue to me either. The Startup space is littered with these kind of failures. There's a graveyard just waiting for businesses that don't create an awesome brand right from the start.
After that failure I spent a lot of time studying the topic. I discovered that a brand goes so much deeper than a name and a logo. I came across strategies and tactics that use human psychology to influence your prospects. I uncovered how the best brands turned their customers into repeat buyers. I figured out the secrets that high paid brand agencies share with their clients. Then I became determined to share these secrets and everything else I had uncovered with other entrepreneurs. That's how the Branding For Profit book was born.

His main background is in the development and marketing of digital products such as web applications and mobile apps having run a Digital Agency for over 12 years. He has worked with several large corporate clients to launch their digital products such as Sky, Sainsburys and JPMorgan Chase.
He is the author of a book called Branding For Profit aimed at helping SMEs to grow by using advanced branding and marketing strategies.
Andre has developed a key understanding of Finance and Investing. He has studied for the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) designation and has received a CQF (Certificate in Quantitative Finance). For several years he has been applying his investment knowledge by investing in property, trading the financial markets and buying profitable companies with good growth opportunities.
